A native of Douglas, Georgia, Dr. Reed received her associates degree of science from South Georgia College and her bachelor of science degree from Valdosta State College in 1983. She completed her medical degree in 1987 from the Medical College of Georgia where she stayed on to complete an internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology. She has two daughters, Amanda and Katelyn, and a son, Carter.
